A new future for the Sapittel mill: social engagement in heritage

The Sapittelmolen in Diepenbeek, a protected monument with roots as far back as 1250, had a rich history. After the Biesmans family acquired the building in 2005, it remained unoccupied for many years. However, the family remained convinced that this historic building could once again play a valuable role, both as a piece of heritage and a place with clear social significance.

That conviction took shape in October 2023, when renovation work officially began. With respect for the heritage rules, sustainable construction methods and a clear social vision, the mill was prepared step by step for a new future. In May 2025, the first residents moved in.

Investing in people together

During the restoration, a conscious choice was made to use sustainable materials and techniques that meet contemporary standards such as a geothermal system and solar panels. The works were carried out under the direction of architect Michel Janssen and contractor Gebroeders Jansen from Oudsbergen, who together ensured a perfect balance between heritage preservation and modern comfort.

The mill's new purpose is at least as special as the building itself. The non-profit organization Tandem is renting the building for 40 years and setting up a home for 14 permanent residents with disabilities. There is also the idea of operating a bicycle café, which will open the site to the neighborhood and passers-by.

"From the start, we involved vzw Tandem in every phase of the building process," explains Filip Biesmans. "The match with them was there right away. For us, it was essential that this project have a social content that is sustainable in the long term. This is their home, where they can stay for life."

Heritage with social added value

The investment of some four million euros goes beyond bricks and mortar. For the Biesmans family, this project is a life's work that fits perfectly with their vision of social commitment.

"The return is not in financial returns, but in the pride of leaving something beautiful behind and in the gratitude you get back from the residents," says Filip. "Building a profitable business with satisfied customers is our daily motivation, but realizing something social for others, that gives an entirely different satisfaction."

Tandem asbl also co-invested in the renovation, as a sign of mutual trust and commitment.

Look Ahead

Whether similar projects will follow? "Not immediately in that magnitude," Filip laughs. "But our love for architecture and social projects is great. Maybe we'll do something similar in the future."

The Biesmans family looks back with pride on the revival of the Sapittel Mill. What was once an empty building is today a place where heritage, sustainability and social commitment come together.
