Biesmans Group launches innovative project for Circular Building with support from VLAIO

The construction industry faces major challenges. Due to the scarcity of raw materials and increasing environmental impact, reuse of building materials is no longer an option, but a necessity. With support from the VLAIO program Circular Chain Cooperation, Biesmans Group, together with V&B Dakwerken and Bureau Bouwtechniek, is working together on innovative solutions to standardize the reuse of building materials.

The construction industry must change: From linear to circular

Lennert Schreurs, innovation manager, explains: "The construction sector is responsible for 40% of the energy demand and a large share of CO₂ emissions in Europe. In addition, a significant proportion of construction waste is not reused, leading to wasted raw materials and a heavy environmental burden. The traditional linear approach, in which materials become waste after a single use, is unsustainable. Reusing materials offers a sustainable solution: it saves raw materials, reduces the environmental footprint and makes the industry future-proof."

Collaboration as the key to success

We are using our expertise and infrastructure to contribute to an innovative project committed to circularity in the construction sector. Together with two specialized SMEs, we form a powerful partnership:

  • V&B Roofing, an expert in roof renovation, develops detailed guidelines for the efficient and damage-free dismantling of building materials.
  • Bureau Bouwtechniek, a specialist in sustainable construction methods, provides construction engineering support and encourages knowledge exchange within the industry.

This collaboration combines both technical and practical knowledge to enable the reuse of building materials on a large scale. The joint efforts of the partners pursue an innovative approach to sustainability that has a positive impact on the entire construction industry.

From innovation to practice

The project focuses on concrete pilot projects testing disassembly, quality control and reuse of materials. Data from these trajectories will be used to develop certification processes and guidelines, contributing to the standardization of reuse in the construction sector. To further increase the impact, workshops, seminars and a knowledge platform will be set up, allowing other players in the sector to access valuable insights.

With the support of VLAIO and the commitment of the three partners, this project puts Limburg on the map as a leader in circular construction. By focusing on innovation and collaboration, the project shows how the transition to a circular construction sector can be economically feasible.
